The Power of History and Community

The Travanca de Lagos Parish Church, formerly known as the Church of Saint Peter of Travanca, is a symbol of our community's faith and identity. Listed as a Property of Public Interest since 1960 (Decree No. 43,073), it is a living testament to centuries of devotion and shared history.

Long before the church we know today, there was the ancient Chapel of Saint Peter, guardian of the origins of our worship. In 1632, the Brotherhood of Saint Peter was born with a clear purpose: to build a church worthy of its patron saint. The strength and unity of the men and women of Travanca de Lagos made possible what seemed unattainable—the construction of a church that would become the spiritual heart of the parish.

Since then, the church has stood with generations. Over the centuries, it has undergone significant conservation work—in 1898, thanks to Colonel António Rodrigues Nogueira, and in 1973, under the leadership of Commander António da Costa Carvalho, with guidance from the DGEMN. Today, it's our turn to continue this story of faith and dedication.

The Artistic Treasure of Travanca de Lagos

The church's interior houses a remarkable artistic ensemble. Four stone pillars define the space, featuring the pulpit and the Manueline triumphal arch leading to the chancel. The nave is flanked by side altarpieces with Baroque carvings in the national style, and the main altarpiece stands out for its sculptures and decorative richness. Among the rarest elements are the 16th-century Mozarabic tiles, made in Seville — an artistic and cultural heritage of exceptional value.

The history of the Church of Travanca de Lagos is living proof that community unity has always been capable of achieving great things. Today, the challenge is new, but the spirit is the same: to preserve what has been bequeathed to us and ensure that this symbol of faith and art continues to inspire future generations.

Beauty at Risk: The Call of the Altars

The three altars—the main altar and the side altars dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Christ Crucified — are in a poor state of repair. Natural wear and tear, combined with time and a lack of preventive maintenance, have caused serious damage: wood attacked by insects and fungi, gilding and paint peeling, stains and burns caused by candles, and accumulated dirt. The main altarpiece also has structural problems that jeopardize its stability.

The restoration project aims to restore these altars to their original beauty and safety. The interventions include complete disassembly of the pieces, disinfection, replacement of irreparable wood, consolidation of the structures, deep cleaning, reintegration of missing elements, and application of fine gold leaf and new artisanal paintings, respecting traditional techniques.

A mission for all of us

Restoring the altars is an ambitious but possible mission—if shared. As in the 17th century, we believe the community can once again unite around this cause.

The total cost of the work is 84,636.30 €, of which 23,387.50 € (27.6%) has already been raised. 61,248.80 € remains to complete this collective effort.

Every donation, no matter how small, is a gesture of continuity—a direct contribution to protecting and enhancing our historical and spiritual heritage, safeguarding our cultural identity for future generations.
